This time of year, real love comes down to more than just a few extra hugs and kisses.

So here are a few simple ideas of how to share the love in a tangible way. For example, if you love the planet you live on, treat it with kindness just by doing a few simple things.

Reduce

We’re not saying don’t enjoy the holiday season. We’re suggesting that for all those items you do buy, look for the ones with as little packaging as possible.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to carry your own tote bag, which eliminates the need for both plastic and paper. And guess what, have one or two really cute ones right up your alley.

Reuse

While beautiful wrapping makes a gift extra special, it’s very wasteful. Try wrapping your gifts in pretty napkins or dishcloths with a fabulous ribbon. Not only will it be the most unique present under the tree, it will show both the planet and the person who’s doing the unwrapping, just how much you love them.

Recycle

We know this is the age-old mantra. But while we’re getting it on some things, we’re not doing so great on others. In fact, newspapers end up in the recycling nearly 88% of the time, but only 21% of phonebooks make it to the bin. And recycling rates for plastic are embarrassingly low as well. According to the Environmental Protection Agency only 7% of plastic manufactured was recycled in 2008. That means there’s less of our cute tees and accessories to go around.
